Dr Anna-Sophie Jürgens is a Science Communication scholar at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (ANU) who explores the cultural meanings of science in different media. Studying the cultural meanings of science reveals where and how cultural narratives about science fit within the science-society relationship. In science communication, she is best known for her publications on science in pop culture and on the role of humour in communicating science in pop cultural narratives and visual media. She published 2 monographs, 6 edited collections (one as the sole editor), and 2 special journal issues (as the sole editor) as well as 32 peer-reviewed academic papers and 32 academic book chapters in the most important journals of her two research areas, including: Journal of Popular Culture (Journal H-Index: 27), Journal of Science Communication (HI: 28), Responsible Innovation (HI:30), Public Understanding of Science (HI: 83).

Books and edited collections
In my main fields of research – science communication and popular culture – publishing books and book chapters is very important. “Traditionally, a monograph published with a prestigious publisher has been a key medium to create and disseminate research in the humanities and social sciences. It has also been important for building scholarly careers and reputations.” (Mrva-Montoya/Luca 2012) Although metrics are slowly being established, it is difficult to track the impact of book chapters and books in my discipline: “Books are generally not available or poorly represented in citation databases” (Mrva-Montoya/Luca 2012).

Academic articles and book chapters
I publish in Science Communication journals, in specialist Humanities journals on science and popular culture topics, including collaborations with scientists. Bibliodiversity is essential in academia. Among other reasons, we publish books and book chapters because the depth, breadth and level of analysis and the amount of material we cover do not fit well into the structure of a scientific paper (see Why Books are Important in the Scholarly Communication System in Social Sciences and Humanities).

w/k – Between Science & Art
w/k – Between Science & Art is a peer-reviewed, open access online journal that explores the many interfaces between art and science for a broad readership. I am committed to internationalising and developing in my role as Editor-in-Chief of the English edition. Articles in the journal are peer-reviewed, research-based and have DOI numbers. Since 2019, I have published 25 articles in this interdisciplinary online journal, many with artists and scientists.

Media pieces (selection)
I regularly speak on the radio about topics related to my research and write articles for The Conversation and other media platforms such as the ANU Reporter.
