What happens when we can no longer draw a clear line between human and nonhuman? And what can a parasitic fungus reveal about being human? Join us tonight for a screening of “The Girl with All the Gifts”, followed by a “Science. Art. Film.” panel discussion exploring fungi, parasitism, science and the unsettling possibilities of a post-apocalyptic world.
I’m delighted to be joined by a fantastic panel bringing three different perspectives to the conversation:
Associate Professor Nathan Emmerich is a bioethicist whose research spans medical ethics, including end-of-life care, conscientious objection and psychedelic medicine.
Dr ShaoJie Jhou is based at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, where his research explores the intersections of science and popular media, with a particular interest in parasites.
Dr Ryan P. O’Donnell is a mycologist, botanist and postdoctoral researcher at the ANU Research School of Biology.
We’ll explore what happens when fungi take centre stage, humanity loses its privileged position and the boundaries between species begin to blur.
There will be zombies. There will be fungi. And we’ll have plenty to talk about!
