What if humans were no longer the dominant species?
“The Girl with All the Gifts” imagines a world in which humanity has lost its dominant position. Is that terrifying because it is biologically plausible – or because it challenges how we think about our place in nature? And what happens when fungi and parasites take centre stage? How much of the film’s unsettling vision is rooted in the real biology of these organisms – and how much is our own imagination?
On Wednesday 28 October, “Science. Art. Film.” returns to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s Arc Cinema with a gripping post-apocalyptic thriller that takes us into the worlds of fungi, parasites, evolution and some very fascinating questions about what it means to be human. After the film, we’ll dive into the science and cultural imagination behind it: fungi, parasites, evolution, infection, survival and the ways popular culture helps us imagine worlds that are both captivating and deeply unsettling.
