Nausicaä!

Our next “Science. Art. Film.” event is approaching – and seats are disappearing quickly! On 20 May at 6pm, we’ll be screening Hayao Miyazaki’s “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”, followed by a conversation exploring the film’s rich intersections of ecology, technology and cultural storytelling.

We’re thrilled to welcome two fantastic guests: Professor Roald Maliangkay (ANU), expert on East Asian culture and K‑pop, and Dr Robert Hardcastle (University of Canberra), Senior Lecturer and Discipline Lead for Film Production!

Together, we’ll explore questions such as:
How does “Nausicaä” challenge contemporary assumptions about technological progress and ecological responsibility? How do the film’s roots in Japanese ecological philosophy and post‑war memory give it global resonance? And how might Miyazaki’s empathy‑driven ethos inspire filmmakers to rethink sustainability and narrative responsibility today?

20 May, 6pm, Arc Cinema
