Super delighted and truly honoured to have had the opportunity yesterday to present the Popsicule and our work on science in pop culture to a packed seminar room – and many more joining online – at the Innovative Genomics Institute at the University of California, Berkeley.
Across our various research and engagement streams – and across media including comics and film – we explore how meanings of science are constructed in the pop-cultural imagination: through which mechanisms, through which aesthetics and with what cultural consequences. This includes examining how synthetic biology and emerging biotechnologies are imagined, narrated, visualised and emotionally framed.
I was especially impressed by the brilliant questions and the lively discussion – including the shared enthusiasm for the idea of a reality show about scientists in the lab. I’d watch it! 😅 😀 Thank you for such an engaging and inspiring event, and for the invitation!
