Absolutely thrilled – and still so inspired – after finally meeting Professor David A. Kirby in person! 🤓 😎 ✨ Professor David Kirby is Chair and Professor of Science, Technology & Society in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department at California Polytechnic State University, and his work has been truly seminal in shaping how we understand the relationship between science and popular culture. His research explores how science and scientists are portrayed in film and media – and how those portrayals influence our broader cultural imagination.
A few years ago, I had the honour of inviting him to contribute to our online intensive “Science, Humour and Pop Culture” (SCOM2006/6006). In his video, he compellingly explains why it is so important to study what he has termed the cultural meanings of science – an approach that underpins much of our own work. That conversation left a lasting impression, making the opportunity to reconnect in person all the more meaningful. (And as if that weren’t enough, visiting San Luis Obispo was an absolute treat – what a fantastically beautiful place!)
If you’re curious about Professor Kirby’s groundbreaking work, I highly recommend starting with his brilliant book “Lab Coats in Hollywood” – an essential read for anyone interested in science, storytelling and the power of cinema. 😎
