Today is the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (#IDWGS). On this day, every year, the incredible contributions of #girls and #women in #STEM are recognized and celebrated.
We celebrate this day with our brand-new book “Women Scientists in American Television Comedy: Beakers, Big Bangs and Broken Hearts” (Palgrave Macmillan) by Dr Karina Judd, Bridget Gaul and Anna-Sophie Jürgens. 😎 🤓
Bringing together science communication, pop culture studies and humour studies, our book explores how women scientists are portrayed in hit American TV comedies: “The Big Bang Theory”, “Never Have I Ever” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”. We illuminate how comedy, especially irony and satire, communicate complex ideas about gender and science – both reflecting and challenging stereotypes about women in science!
This book uncovers the roles that science communication, humour and pop culture play in shaping our understanding of women in STEM and clarifies what we can learn from popular TV shows about and for the real-life experiences of women working in science, technology, engineering and medicine.
